The intoxicating mystic power of Calcutta pulls them in separate and unexpected directions and the vulnerability of their marriage begins to reveal itself. (M) 100mins plus Mother and Child is a striking drama centred around three women whose paths will cross and change them forever: Karen (Annette Bening) a reserved 50-year old nurse, who was forced to give up her daughter Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) for adoption 35 years ago and has now grown into a single-minded career woman; and Lucy (Kerry Washington), desperate to adopt a child of her own. (M) 142mins plus The Hurt Locker has the impact of the explosive devices at the heart of its plot: Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit works in Baghdad where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb. Worse still - their new commander (Jeremy Renner) seems suicidal. Winner of 6 Oscars (incl. Best Film). (MA15+) 131mins

FOUR LIONS plus THE WAITING CITY
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 27 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE
Could there be a more hot-button topic than terrorism these days? Although it is usually the subject of serious films, British comedian Chris Morris (The Day Today, Brass Eye) finds the humour (and ultimately the humanity) in this extremist world. Four Lions is a comic tour de force; it shows that - while terrorism is about ideology - it can also be about idiots. (M) 101mins plus The Waiting City tells the story of an outwardly happy Australian couple (Radha Mitchell and Joel Edgerton) who journey to India to collect their adopted baby. The intoxicating mystic power of Calcutta pulls them in separate and unexpected directions and the vulnerability of their marriage begins to reveal itself. (M) 108mins

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED plus THE KILLER INSIDE ME
MONDAY OCTOBER 4 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE
In the first ten (wordless) minutes, Alice Creed has already proven itself an economical debut thriller on par with Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave - with which it’s often been compared. Prepping for an abduction with ruthless efficiency, ex-cons Vic (Eddie Marsan) and Danny (Martin Compston) get their prey, Alice (Gemma Arterton), trussed and shackled in a soundproofed room. Yet the more meticulously one plans the perfect crime, the less effort it takes for things to go very awry. (tba) 100mins plus Director Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) has adapted the haunting thriller by Jim Thompson (The Grifters, The Getaway) to the screen. Casey Affleck is Lou Ford, a young Sheriff in a small middle-American town who seems like a regular with a nice girlfriend (Kate Hudson) but Lou is actually a cunning and depraved sociopath. When a case warrants the arrest of a beautiful young prostitute (Jessica Alba), Lou can’t restrain his urges and soon falls into a tangle of darkness, lust and deceit. (MA15+) 98mins

CAIRO TIME plus THE WHITE RIBBON
MONDAY OCTOBER 11 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE
Director Ruba Nadda (Sabah) again explores cross-cultural romance with Juliette (Patricia Clarkson), a magazine editor, who travels to Cairo to meet her husband, a UN official working in Gaza. When he is unavoidably delayed, he sends his friend Tareq (Alexander Siddig) to escort her throughout the beautiful and exotic city. They find themselves in the middle of a brief affair that catches them both unawares. (M) 90mins plus A staunchly Protestant village in northern Germany in World War I is plagued by a series of mysterious accidents - the doctor tumbles from his horse, a farmer's wife falls to her death from a barn loft - which become increasingly more sinister and brutal. Neighbour turns against neighbour, even as the cruelty pervading the village breeds fresh atrocities. This latest thriller from Michael Haneke (Funny Games, Hidden) was last year's Palme D'Or (Cannes) winner. (M) 144mins

I'M STILL HERE: JOAQUIN PHOENIX plus LEONARD COHEN: I'M YOUR MAN
MONDAY OCTOBER 18 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE

I'm Still Here is a striking portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of internationally acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix. With remarkable access, it follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. Sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and always rivetting. (tba) 108mins plus Songwriter. Poet. Counter-culture icon. Leonard Cohen has inspired generations with his unique personality and haunting music, becoming one of the most original and enduring artists to emerge from the 1960s. Now, celebrate Cohen's legacy with an intimate look at the songs, poetry and life of one of music's most celebrated and influential troubadours. (MA15+) 105mins

THE GHOST WRITER plus THE RUNAWAYS
MONDAY OCTOBER 25 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE
Ewan McGregor plays an aspiring writer turned reluctant hack for hire. He agrees to complete the memoirs-in-progress of the former UK Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan), following the suspected suicide of the former ghost writer. Director Roman Polanski (who won Best Director Prize at the last Berlin Film Fest.) has woven a moody, gothic political thriller based on the novel by Robert Harris (Enigma, Fatherland). (MA15+) 128mins plus Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. One of the standout characters is rock impresario (and the man behind KISS) Kim Fowley (played by Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and afamily of misfits. (MA15+) 106mins

THE RELUCTANT INFIDEL plus THE LAST STATION
MONDAY NOVEMBER 1 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE

BOY plus THE TREE
MONDAY NOVEMBER 8 - 7.30pm - LEEDERVILLE
The year is 1984. Thriller tops the charts. Boy (James Rolleston) is a dreamer who lives on the East Coast of New Zealand and who loves Michael Jackson. His other hero, his father, Alamein (writer/director Taika Waititi), is the subject of Boy's fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson. In reality he’s in prison for robbery. Boy is a funny, sweet, heartbreaking film that’s become the highest grossing N.Z. film ever - as well as winning the audience prizes at both Sydney and Melb. Film Festivals. (M) 88mins plus This lyrical film about dealing with loss is set in stunning rural Queensland and is based on a book by Aussie author and former Circus Oz performer Judy Pascoe. A young child - played with range and precision by newcomer Morgana Davies - becomes convinced her dead father is whispering to her through the leaves of a Morton Bay fig tree on the family property. Also starring Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist) and Aden Young. (M) 101mins

When her husband fails the test she has set him, Catherine finds herself unexpectedly enthralled by the vivid accounts of his dalliances - and so begins a sexual journey of experiments, lies and revelations. (MA15+) 96mins
