A tough and tender love story about friendship, first love and staying sane in small town Ireland. ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle (Seána Kerslake) needs to find a date for her best friend’s wedding. But her attempts to find a partner are a disaster … until she meets Jess (Tara Lee - The Fall) and everything changes.
This remarkable first feature from Darren Thornton has been wowing festival audiences around the world since its award winning debut at the Galway Film Fleadh last year. Thornton has a way with words and empathy for the small-town characters who inhabit the underbelly world of his home town of Drogheda (just north of Dublin). Thornton eschews the obvious picture postcard locations, choosing instead the faux pubs and tawdry discos as a background for this love story with a twist. There’s a dark but ribald humour to ‘Mad’ Mary’s cinematic small town Irish world reminiscent of Pat McCabe’s The Butcher Boy. It’s now an Ireland of fast food Mac-jobs and petty racism but Darren Thornton finds humour and hope and displays a genuine affection for the language and humanism of modern Ireland.
