Revelation favourite Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise, A Field in England, and Down Terrace) returns with the seventies-set, Boston shootout Free Fire.
Primarily a crime-action movie, with a healthy touch of darkcomedy, Free Fire follows two gangs of criminals as they meet to complete a deal involving a large quantity of guns. Invariably whatever plans that have been put in place are soon derailed and the bullets start to fly (and fly).
What follows is a character-driven piece where Wheatley and regular scriptwriter Amy Jump continue to showcase their talent for tightly, wryly scripted, well-paced narrative cinema. From costume design to camera-work to the score, Free Fire stands out. Add a killer top-notch cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson, Sharlto Copley and Jack Reynor, and it’s clear that Free Fire is yet another success for Wheatley and Jump, who at this point seem to be carving out their own unique place in contemporary cinema.
